Melfort Arts Council gains great feedback in community survey

The Melfort Arts Council now has an idea as to what residents would like to see for arts in the community.

Topping the list in a community survey conducted by the arts council was live music performances followed by comedy shows.

Council chair Joanne Bolen said they gained a lot of great feedback from the survey.

“We got almost 200 responses over the last few weeks which we were very happy to see,” Bolen said. ” We asked anyone 15 years and up and we got a nice cross section from all age groups.”

For genre of music, pop topped the list and country and rock tied for second.

With the arts council still being in the rebuild phase, the next step for the council is to build a database for arts in the area.

“We have heard from time-to-time, when people move into the area or want to expand their own art practice, they don’t know where to go or how to network,” Bolen said. “We want a database of any artists in the area or places where you can get art supplies, that type of thing.”

The council will be reaching out to the community for that information to put on their website as a one stop shop for all things art.

“I think we are in such a great position to get arts back up and running in Melfort, especially after this pandemic,” Bolen said.

This winter, we can look forward to the return of some bigger events as public health restrictions loosen further over the summer.

Visual art exhibits continue with a new one being set up at the Kerry Vickar Centre on Tuesday night.

“The new exhibit includes paintings, sculptures, and objects of Frank Cicanksy and internationally renowned Victor Cicanksy,” Bolen said.

The exhibit will be on display for around three weeks.
