Raiders with 14th pick in draft; Allan and Schneider win East Division Awards

The Prince Albert Raiders will have the 14th overall selection in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, as a result of the league’s draft lottery on Wednesday.

The Raiders have never in their history chosen a player with the 14th overall pick. The Raiders had the 15th selection last year choosing Terrell Goldsmith. Goldsmith went on to win the Raiders’ Rookie of the Year award.

The Spokane Chiefs won the lottery and will have the first pick of the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft.

Here is the full draft order for this year’s draft, which will take place on Dec. 9.

Award winners

A pair of defencemen with local ties have won WHL East Division Awards, and are nominated for the overall WHL awards which will be announced on the week of June 7.

Prince Albert Raiders blueliner Nolan Allan won the divisional award for Scholastic Player of the Year, while Prince Albert’s Braden Schneider won Defenceman of the Year for the division as captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Allan was also the Raiders’ Scholastic Player of the Year, after registering a 90 per cent average in both semesters. Allan also won a gold medal with the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Frisco, Texas.

Schneider finished third in WHL defencemen scoring this year with 27 points (five goals) in 22 games played.

Braden Schneider has an assist for Team Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Championships in Riga, Latvia. Canada will take on Russia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
