18U Beavers to begin season next week

The 18U AA Beavers will open their baseball season next week in Unity.

Following an abbreviated season last year that didn’t begin until the brink of the summer, the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League AA (SPBLAA) will be returning to a full 22-game schedule this spring.

The league’s 15 teams will be divided into three divisions of five, so each team will play each of their division rivals four times apiece, with the remainder of the schedule being made up of additional crossover games.

Head coach of the 18U’s, Dean Dimmick said the team is excited to get back on the diamond this year for a full schedule as usual, as many of the local players have been chomping at the bit to get back out there and playing the sport over the last number of months.

“It’s vital to get back to baseball and offer [the players] a full season,” Dimmick said. “Battlefords Minor Baseball does have an indoor facility, and some of the guys have been throwing the ball since about last fall and hitting, so they’ll be raring to go. They’re always looking forward to getting back to ball each year.”

The Beavers will be looking to pick up where they left off last season, as the team had a strong year as a young group. Despite being among the youngest teams in the entire SPBLAA, North Battleford got off to a sizzling start, posting a 6-3-1 record through their opening 10 games on their way to a 13-8-1 record on the season.

With just two third-year players, three second-years, and five full-time first-years returning this year, in addition to a number of 15U affiliates expected to get a good look with the 18U’s this spring, Dimmick said the team has a positive outlook heading into the season ahead.

“It’s looking like a really good group; we’re going to be probably even younger than last year so that bodes well for the future, and our core is pretty solid,” Dimmick said.

“Ultimately, our goal is to help these kids develop, whether that’s moving onto the next level or just continuing to build a strong program at this AA level, so hopefully we turn our youthful enthusiasm into some wins while we do that, and we’re looking forward to getting started.”

The Beavers will open their season on the road against the Unity Cardinals June 10, and will host their home-opener June 16 versus the Saskatoon Athletics. For full schedule details, click here.
