Trappers-Beavers to clash Wednesday

Senior baseball proves a hit in community as season begins for local teams

With the whip of the ball, and a crack of the bat, senior baseball returned with a bang in the Battlefords, Tuesday evening at Beaver Lions Stadium.

The Battlefords Trappers opened their season with an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Kindersley Stallions, while the North Battleford Beavers also dropped their opener in Standard Hill, to the powerhouse Lakers.

However, despite the outcomes, there was little that could stop members of both teams from sharing a smile long after the final pitch was thrown.

“It was just great to get back out there,” Trappers’ catcher, Andrew Hudec said postgame. “It was a long winter with not much to do, so to be out here and playing ball with all the guys again was really great.”

Both teams will be looking for a quick bounce-back, as the Beavers and Trappers will clash Wednesday evening, with one team destined to right the ship and pull to 1-1 on the year.

Hudec said the Trappers are looking forward to the chance to play the cross-town rival Beavers, as the local showdowns are always ones circled on the calendar ahead of time.

“It’ll be good. We won’t dwell on the loss [last night] too much, and we’ll get right back out against the other [local] team, so that’ll be a good rivalry and we’re definitely excited for that one.”

In the other dugout, the Beavers are also approaching the evening’s contest in a similar light. Player-coach, Kyle Gregoire said having gotten the chance to get their feet under them a bit last night, the boys are excited for their home-opener Wednesday against their friends and neighbours from the community.

“We’re definitely excited and ready to go, and I know in talking with the other team they’re excited as well, so it’ll be fun to start that rivalry up and get it going again early in the season here,” Gregoire said.

“We started off pretty good last night before a couple of rough innings, so hopefully we can get a good crowd out with the COVID protocols, and have another good night of baseball.”

Wednesday’s matchup between the Beavers and Trappers will begin at 7:30 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two sides since last year’s quarterfinals playoff matchup that saw the Beavers eliminate the Trappers on their run to the league final.
