Trappers edge cross-town rival Beavers 3-2 in all-Battlefords showdown

Jun 10, 2021 | 2:03 PM

It was a great day for baseball Wednesday evening at Beaver Lions Stadium, as the rain held off for the Battlefords Trappers and North Battleford Beavers’ all-local showdown.

The first and only meeting of the season between the two community-based clubs, the game lived up to the hype – decided by just a single run, as the Trappers edged the Beavers 3-2 in a classic pitcher’s dual.

Tappers’ player-coach Gavin Nolin pitched seven innings in the win, striking out 15 batters, while sacrificing just two runs in the process. Aaron Cadrin also had a night to remember on the mound for the Beavers, throwing for 10 strikeouts, while not allowing a single run through six innings on the mound.

Following the night’s action, Trappers’ right-fielder Bob Hudec, who had a game-high three RBI (runs batted in) said Nolin’s performance was key to the team’s victory, along with the group finding a way to step up in key moments to make plays.

“He (Nolin) was incredible tonight,” Hudec said postgame. “Obviously he was unreal, and as a team – after not a great game last night – we managed to come together and get the win here, so it feels good to get that first ‘W’ of the season.”

“I mean anytime you play against these guys (the Beavers) it’s always a good game; you always want to beat the other team in town and get those bragging rights.” – Bob Hudec

With the win, the Trappers improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Beavers fall to 0-2.

However, while the single-run loss Wednesday is still a bit tough to swallow for the team, Beavers’ player-coach Kyle Gregoire said as they regain their composure and prepare for next week there are still plenty of positives to build off of from the team’s opening couple of games.

“I think the pitching on both sides was outstanding last night, and Aaron [Cadrin] really held us in there, down just 2-0 heading into the 7th inning, giving us a real chance,” Gregoire said. “We can definitely look to build off of some of those things moving forward, and it’s a long season, so we just have to get ourselves reset and ready to go for next week.”

The Beavers will return to action Tuesday in Macklin versus the Lakers, while the Trappers will play the following night (Wed.) versus the Unity Junior Cardinals.
