Battleford’s commemorative bench program honours loved ones/special events in community

The Town of Battleford is offering their commemorative bench program once again this year.

The program which began in 2018, provides residents with an opportunity to honour the life of a loved one, an individual, group or special event with a commemorative bench featuring a plaque in their name, to be placed in a suitable location somewhere within the community.

Director of parks and recreation with the town, Jordan Schechtel said it’s a program they are happy to continue to offer it this year, for those interested in the community.

“It’s been good, we’ve had a couple added each year and if we just keep getting a couple more each year, things will fill up over time,” he said.

Schechtel also added special locations of significance to the family member or friend honoured can also be requested.

“If an individual or family would like a specific location, a town staff will also be happy to go out and meet them on-site and help them determine the best spot to put it,” he said.

Possible locations for the benches could include along the walking trail or in one of the local parks, among other areas around the community.

Price points for the commemorative benches (with plaque included) remain the same as years past. The vinyl-coated model is available for $1,500 plus tax, with a metal model also available for $2,500 plus tax. In either case, the cost also covers the installation and concrete pad for the bench.

Since the commemorative bench is considered a donation, those who take part in the program will also receive a tax receipt.

The town will guarantee each bench for 15 years, during which time they will take care of any maintenance or fixing up that needs to be done. After 15 years, so long as the bench is still in good shape it will remain where it is.

Should the bench become in disrepair however, the town would then look to replace it with a new bench, and contact the family members or original inquiring party to see if they are interested in taking part in the program again. If not, that spot would then become available to others in the community once again.

For more information or to request a commemorative bench, contact the town or visit their website.
