Fire at Nipawin Landfill now contained

Jun 16, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The Nipawin Landfill was the site of a small fire on Tuesday, June 15.

According to Mayor Rennie Harper, who is also the chairperson of the Boreal Area Waste Authority Inc. (BARWA), the fire was in one of the cells at the landfill. She said they were made aware of the blaze around 2 p.m. on Tuesday and fire crews were sent out. Since then, crews have managed to contain the blaze and it’s considered to just be smoldering at this point.

“We’re doing all the monitoring, and we’ve brought in a bulldozer and so on and so forth to make sure that we move the garbage around in the cell,” Harper said. “To make sure that all the hot spots are out and stuff like that.”

Harper said after all the hot spots are put out, an investigation will take place into what happened to cause the fire. She said it likely has something to do with the recent heat, crushed glass, and some paper waste.

“It’s very common to have happen,” Harper said. “But it just hasn’t happened to us before.”

The landfill was completely closed for a period of time over the last 24 hours, but is has re-opened in sections. Right now, it is closed for household waste, but is open for all other types of waste. Curbside pickup will not be affected by this either.

Harper added that BARWA’s Household Hazardous Waste Day will still go ahead as well on Saturday, June 19.
