Tri-communities in the running for $100,000 national challenge

The tri-communities are currently sitting third provincially in a national competition for $100,000.

Many residents are logging the time they spend doing physical activity as part of ParticipACTION’s Community Better Challenge. The competition spans from June 1 to 30 and the tri-communities are third provincially behind Milestone and Redvers, and is ranked 41 nationally out of 2,200 communities.

“It’s been a really great turn out so far,” said Colin Ratushniak, Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre Fitness Supervisor and Mayor of La Ronge. “Especially with the nice weather, I think it was great for people to be able to try new things and meet new people. The turnout has been fantastic.”

There are many activities residents can enjoy this week including beach volleyball, canoeing, CrossFit, golf, trail walks, ultimate frisbee, yoga and more. All the events are free to attend as long as those taking part have the ParticipACTION app installed on their phone.

Ratushniak explained the top 50 communities in the competition will be invited to submit a proposal about why they believe they should win the $100,000. There are also separate prizes for each province.

“I personally think we have a really good chance considering how many events we have going on,” he said.

Ratushniak also mentioned it would open up many opportunities if the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre wins the top prize. If that happens, he noted the money would be used to benefit all tri-community residents.
