After having read the magazine for most of his life, Prince Albert drummer Kenny Kuzniar was featured in the May edition of Modern Drummer Magazine.

“The first magazine that I bought was in 1988 and I always wondered if I would ever be in the magazine and that day actually came,” Kuzniar told paNOW. “It’s been an incredible honor to be a part of.”

Kuzniar’s story was selected as the magazine’s “Kit of the Month,” which delves into detail on the elaborate setup he designed with drum maker Dustin Drummond to celebrate Kuzniar’s 30 years of playing the drums.

The handcrafted drum set that is featured in the magazine was custom built. It is yellow and green, resembling Kuzniar’s home province of Saskatchewan. The kit is one-of-a-kind and is so loud, Kuzniar said you can feel the bass when he is playing.

“Pictures of the handcrafted drum-set circulated online, eventually making the way to a content director for the magazine,” Kuzniar said.

Throughout his time in the music industry, Kenny has toured across Canada with many different bands and also teaches drums to local youth.

When live entertainment was available, he played at many different clubs and outdoor festivals in Prince Albert. While the support in northern Saskatchewan has always been great, Kenny has noticed audiences all around Canada are loud, and excited for the entertainment.

“It’s the same response from crowds playing across Canada,” Kuzniar said. “It’s a little bit more comforting playing in front of an audience you know, you feel more accepted.

“Prince Albert is a very nice stepping stone to be a part of.”

Kenny has had a very long career that has featured many highlights across the nation. One of the things he mentioned was his previous work as a stage-hand, setting up drums for bands like Kiss, Poison, Def Leopard, Van Halen, and Rod Stewart.

Kenny has about 20 students he teaches weekly, but due to COVID protocols, Kenny hasn’t been teaching recently. This fall, he plans on getting back into teaching and also recording.

Being in the industry for so long, Kenny has plenty to share with other artists picking up on the craft.

“Being one-on-one, actually teaching a new beginner or an advanced drummer [means a lot to me],” Kuzniar explained. “Teaching and watching students learning techniques on the drum while putting their own twists on it is a great feeling.”

Being featured in the magazine is very special to him. Along the road, he has had plenty of support. He would like to thank all his family, friends, and drum students for all the help in getting him to where he is today.
