It is an exciting time for those looking to stay active this summer at North Battleford’s Credit Union CUplex.

As of this week, the Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre and NationsWest Field House have both seen things open up a bit more, thanks to the implementation of Step 2 in the Provincial Re-open Plan which took effect Sunday.

NationsWEST Field House

At the NationsWEST Field House, indoor sports are back in action.

From basketball and volleyball to pickleball, badminton and more, this week marks the first time since the end of November that indoors sports and activities will be offered at the facility.

CUplex manager Michelle Horncastle said they’re happy to see the community excited about the return of indoor sports and rec., with many chomping at the bit to get back to the activities they enjoy.

“I had quite a few phone calls between Thursday and Friday from quite a few different contacts,” she said. Some people were making sure they could come in and play pickleball Sunday; and then one of the courts [was] rented Sunday night by a group of men to play basketball, so I think there was definitely some excitement leading up to June 20.”

Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre

At the Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre, capacity has increased from the 80-person limit in place since last fall, to now allow up to 135 patrons.

Additionally, lower-level swimming lessons, including the Sea Otter, Salamander and Sunfish levels 1-3 will no longer require an adult in the pool with them, while class sizes from Preschool to Level 4 will also be able to expand from four to six participants per class.

Parents will also be allowed back in the building during lesson times to watch their child participate in the classes.

Horncastle said whether swimming at the Aquatic Centre or sports/fitness at the Field House, the CUplex is just glad to be able to provide a place for the youth and others in the community to get out of the house and get physically active.

“When kids are out of school, it’s nice that [the CUplex] can be a place for them to go,” Horncastle said.

“We have a great facility here in North Battleford with the turf, the three courts, and more swim times for people to come and enjoy the indoor pool here. So it’s just good to be able to utilize those spaces again and be able to have people come out and enjoy them.”

In accordance with the provincial guidelines, masks remain mandatory at the CUplex until at least July 11, while contact-tracing measures also remain in place with sign-in required at the door for all coming into the building.
