Several events were held in the northeast to recognize national indigenous people’s day.

The Marguerite Riel Centre (MRC) in Melfort hosted a barbecue at Memorial Gardens that featured the Digging Bear drum group from the James Smith Cree Nation.

Resolution health support worker at the MRC told northeastNOW the event really brought everyone together.

“We like when having an opportunity for aboriginal and non-aboriginal people to just look and listen at the culture and the first nation dance style and singing,” Delorme said.

The MRC has been in the community for many years, but staff at the centre continue to work at getting more people involved with their programming.

“We want people to know more about what the centre is all about as well and that we are open to absolutely anyone,” Delorme said.

There were orange shirts on display along the paths at Memorial Garden to symbolize the 215 lives lost to residential schools that were recently found in Kamloops B.C.

A new Indigenous peoples and archaeology building also had a soft opening at the Melfort and District Museum. A small group of people were able to take part in dances at the museum grounds from the Digging Bear drum group.

Reconciliation Nipawin had a flag-raising at the Town Office that included dignitaries from the town and local Cree and Metis Nations.

This is the third consecutive year for the Reconciliation Nipawin flag raising in the community.
