Chuckwagon fun run brings in significant financial contribution to local minor athletics

Hundreds of residents from Meadow Lake and the surrounding area gathered over the weekend to enjoy one of the community’s favourite pastimes while supporting local minor sports.

Chuckwagon drivers from the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) and World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) held a fun run over the weekend to support the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association and the Meadow Lake Skating Club. The event drew a large crowd, both in the grandstands and their vehicles, that didn’t disappoint with its generosity.

Now that the dust has settled, Meadow Lake’s own D.J. King is reporting those who attended the event raised over $31,000 for the local sport clubs.

While the total may be astounding to some, King said he isn’t surprised by the community’s consistent generosity.

“It is a big number, but to be honest, our community is so strong, and I knew that the support was going to be there,” King said. “Without the great support of our community and businesses, we don’t raise that number that we got.”

With a successful fundraising exhibition now in the books, the chuckwagon drivers are preparing for the upcoming CPCA and WPCA seasons.

Having completed three exhibition runs, King said he and the other drivers are ready to go when the official races begin.

“The drivers all did a really good job, and everything went pretty smooth. It was good for all of the drivers to get out there and get some driving in, and at the same time, be able to give back to the community.

The CPCA season is set to begin on June 24 in Poundmaker Cree Nation, SK while the WPCA is expected to start on July 1 in Dewberry, AB.
