The Horizon School Division Board of Education has submitted its budget to the Ministry of Education for the 2021-22 school year.

Around $96.6 million in revenue is being distributed in the budget for the school division’s 43 schools.

The budget includes a one per cent increase in operating grant revenue.

Capital grant funding from the province includes an additional $233,570 for preventative maintenance and renewal and $9.764 million for the new school in Lanigan.

“Our Lanigan school project is a monster,” Horizon School Division director of education Kevin Garinger said. “We’re looking forward to supporting our students in Lanigan with that new build. We expect that we’re going to have shovels in the ground by March of 2022.”

The school division will be installing LED lights at all their facilities.

“It’s much cheaper which allows us to do additional preventative maintenance and renewal work,” Garinger said. “We are really able to focus on supporting the needs in the classrooms. We are just able to do more with the funding that we have.”

The budgeted surplus is also $9.764 million for the year ending August 31, 2022.

“We are making sure that our children and staff are in a good place,” Garinger added. “There are a lot of very good things that we’re excited about.”

Garinger said he expects to hear if the Ministry of Education has approved the budget this summer.
