North Stars AGM features reflection on lost season, renewed optimism for 2021-22

The Battlefords North Stars held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) Monday evening, to discuss the team’s outlook both financially and otherwise moving forward, following an unprecedented 2020-21 season.

Coming off a lost campaign due to the pandemic, this year’s AGM featured a bit of mixed emotion. On one hand, the team was disappointed reflecting back on the lack of a season last year, while on the other there was felt an almost palpable excitement for a return to normalcy at the Access Communications Centre this fall.

The Stars were held to just three games last year, making revenue from game days and team events virtually non-existent. However, thanks to government financial aid, the club’s many corporate sponsors, and individual and business supporters, the Stars were still able to finish the season with a small profit margin of just under $25,500.

Team president Shandon Reichert said the organization is very grateful for all the support they received, which allowed them to navigate the unchartered and challenging waters of uncertainty that plagued much of last year.

“We did get a lot of support from the Federal and Provincial Government, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, Sask. Lotteries and Northwest Hockey Development as usual, as well as the city of North Battleford,” Reichert said.

“We couldn’t have made it through the season that wasn’t without their help and support, as well as that of our corporate sponsors, who also really stuck with us through thick and thin last year. We can’t say enough about the support they’ve given us over the years, and especially last year when there was no hockey.”

Due to some financial restraints that come with the loss of last season, discussions were held Monday about likely implementing a slight increase in season ticket prices from year’s prior, though official numbers are expected to be determined in the coming weeks.

Reichert said the North Stars are looking forward to getting back on the ice with fans in the building this fall.

“We’re very excited to get the season going here again and get everybody back in the rink and the corporate sponsors back in the loop,” he said. “The fans and the community are looking forward to it too, so we’re ready to play hockey and we’ll be ready to go in the fall.”

SJHL League AGM

The North Stars’ team AGM came following the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) AGM and scheduling meeting, which featured management representatives from each of the league’s 12 member clubs in Humboldt June 24-26.

With their eyes on the season ahead, each team submitted their proposed building availability dates and times with an expected return to a full 58-game schedule in 2021-22.

The full North Stars schedule is expected to be released in the days ahead.
