Convenience store being added to Nickle’s Corner Diner in Melfort

A convenience store is being added to Nickles Corner in Melfort.

The idea came after closing the dining room and switching to takeout and delivery out of the banquet room due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Owner/operator Bryce Nicklefork told northeastNOW the store will benefit the neighbourhood.

“The high school is just down the street two blocks, Co-op is moving, there is Legion Place next door, apartment buildings all down Main Street,” Nicklefork said. “Theres a lot of people in this area that have to walk all the way to Shell to get a slush or to get milk late at night or to get little snacks and munchies.”

Feedback so far on the addition of the convenience store has been quite positive according to Nickelfork.

He added that he is excited to get started especially with the offering of some specific items.

“When the 7-11 closed, the good deep-fried, battered wedges went with them,” Nickelfork said. “Since they left, you have to go to Tisdale or Prince Albert or Saskatoon to get good wedges, so I just am really excited to sell wedges.”

Plans are also in place to add a patio area to the front of the store.

When the store opens its doors, there will be a small selection of chips, snacks, gum, and sweets. There will also be pop, slushes, hot chocolates, cappuccinos, espresso drinks, milkshakes, hard ice-cream, as well as soft serve ice-cream. Deep fried foods aside from the wedges will include wings, kabobs, chicken strips, and corn dogs.

“We can expand and offer more of what this area actually wants and what the school kids actually want,” Nicklefork said.

A small grocery section will be available for items such as milk, cereal, and eggs.

Plans are also in place for a small patio on the front of the store.

“If the price of lumber was a bit more reasonable, we would have added it right away with stairs and a ramp and have a picnic table,” Nicklefork said.

Nickles Corner Diner opened in 2016.
