Registration to open this week for fifth Annual Gold Eagle Open

Registration opens this Friday (July 9), for the fifth Annual Gold Eagle Open disc golf tournament at Battlefords Provincial Park.

The largest disc golf tournament in Saskatchewan, the event will be held Sept. 11-12 on the Jackfish Lake Disc Golf Course.

Tournament director, Evan Zimmer said it’s been great to see the sport of disc golf continue to grow each year in both the local community and Saskatchewan, with another strong turnout expected this year as well.

“It’s obviously great to see, as we’ve all been working really hard to try to grow and develop our community and our sport, not only in the Battlefords but across the province,” Zimmer said. “Registration for this year’s event is expected to fill up within hours, so we’re kind of seeing the fruits of our labour, so to speak.”

Zimmer said with people from across Saskatchewan, and beyond expected to make the trip to the Battlefords for the event, it provides an opportunity to showcase the best of the community, as a valuable destination with things to offer.

“It’s about putting on the best event we can for our participants and to bring people to the Battlefords,” he said. “It’s really a destination tournament for a lot of people across Saskatchewan and across Canada.”

In addition to the disc golf itself, the weekend will also feature other festivities for families to enjoy. Saturday the provincial park will be hosting an outdoor movie on the main beach, with a fireworks show scheduled for the following night (Sept. 11) at Robinson’s Bay Beach.

Registration for the Gold Eagle Open will become available Friday at 6 p.m., and is available here. All proceeds from the event will go back into the club, and be put towards future events, such as youth and women’s programs.

Free Kids Disc Golf Camp

The local disc golf club is also offering a free Kids Disc Golf Camp this weekend, July 10-11 in conjunction with the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

Offered at the Centennial Park Disc Golf Course, the event will be available for youth ages seven to 11, serving as an opportunity for the next generation of disc golfers to try the sport. The camp will run 1-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with each youth who attends also receiving their own free starter set with three discs included.

For more information, or to register for the kids’ camp, email rwdscr.yc@sasktel.net or call Antje at (306) 480-9875.

Two Town Throwdown

July 17 at North Battleford’s Centennial Park will be this year’s ‘Two Town Throwdown.’ Another annual tournament, this one is more Battlefords local-specific, as its name would suggest.

The Two Town Throwdown is open to all age groups and experience levels, and will be held over the one day. Registration is available now for the event, here.
