The Battlefords Pride group is getting ready to celebrate Pride Week next month with a variety of activities, running from Aug. 16 to Aug. 22.

Battlefords Pride committee president Bobbisue Thompson said the organization is also looking at having some type of vigil during the week, to recognize all marginalized people.

“Our hearts go out to everybody who is marginalized,” she said. “We are working on a vigil to show our support, and show that people care.”

Among the lineup of events during Pride Week include the flag- raising ceremony at North Battleford City Hall on the morning of Aug. 16. Later in the day, people are welcome to relax for a fun evening of trivia games at the Downstairs Bar and Grill in Porta Bella Restaurant.

There will also be a flag-raising ceremony in Battleford, with the date still to be confirmed.

On Aug. 17, organizers are planning a karaoke evening in the gazebo of the Lion’s Park downtown in the town of Battleford.

Then, on Aug. 18 there will be an evening of bowling at Gutters Bowling and Game Centre. Participation is by donation, depending on Pride’s funding.

On Aug. 19, plans are to have a drag stylist and performance workshop located in the cafeteria area of North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) during the day.

“There will be some experts, helping out with make-up and styling,” Pride committee member Kelly Waters said.

Later on Aug. 19 in the evening there will be a family-friendly drag performance to be held at NBCHS, that is free by donation to attend.

Aug. 20 looks like a fun time as the Pride group hopes to be able to host a movie night at the Capital Theatre North Battleford, with admission by donation. The details are still in the works.

On Aug. 21 at 1 p.m., an event called Drag Queen Storytelling with Celine is planned in Central Park with a potential for guest speaker to also attend.

The annual Pride parade is planned for 2 p.m. that day with a walking event, as well as possibly a driving caravan of cars for the parade as well. Participants will leave from and return to outside the public library at Central Park in North Battleford. The full details are still being finalized.

“We’re hoping we have a good turnout,” Thompson said. “We’re very family-friendly. We’re part of the community, and being family-friendly is important in this community. So we’re emphasizing that. So you can bring your kids, and you can bring your grandma. It’s for all ages.”

In the evening on Aug. 21, there is a ticketed event called Drag Me Across Saskatchewan drag show tour presented by the YXE Drag Collective and the Saskatchewan Pride Network based out of Saskatoon, to be held at the parking lot of the Frontier Mall in North Battleford. Tickets can be purchased online for this event.

On Aug. 22, an family-friendly outdoor event is planned in the lawn area behind the Chapel Gallery, that will include vendors, music, face-painting, and other activities that will be announced after everything is finalized.

“We are going to have a big week,” Waters said.

Leading up to Pride Week, on August 8 the local Pride group is planning a Pride Crosswalk painting event in North Battleford.

“People are welcome to help come to paint,” Waters said. “It will be faster with more people there.”
