P.A. youth theatre program bounces back with Disney production

After a very curtailed offering last year because of the COVID pandemic, youth theatre in Prince Albert is back with a bang.

The Broadway North Theatre Company is putting on Disney’s Frozen Jr. come December as they welcome back a full fall musical and educational program.

And with COVID restrictions set to end on Sunday, there is already a buzz and a sense in the community that we’re coming out of a dark period, according to Cara Stelmaschuk, the Marketing and Events Coordinator at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts.

“We announced what the show was going to be and that registration is opening and people lost their minds,” the effervescent Stelmaschuk told paNOW. “They definitely want to get back to that sense of normal, but it speaks to how fun this program is, how much people enjoy it, and what it means to them.”

Registration opens Friday for a total of 80 youngsters across three age groups between seven and 18 who can secure on-stage or technical roles.

Interested parents can enroll their child online at www.earc.ca/youth-company.

Last year the COVID restrictions initially forced the ensemble to split up into small working groups and then ultimately the live performances had to be cancelled.

Stelmaschuk said it’s important to have the program back to how it should be.

“Kids who love the performing arts, especially the younger ones, have limited outlets…for a fully fledged theatre program,” she said. “Everyone is part of a team: you work together, you put on a really good show, and you get to eat all that energy up when you’re on stage.”

Rehearsals run every Saturday throughout the fall leading up to several shows in December that can have full houses of over 600 people at a time, according to Stelmaschuk.

“There are no winners or loses, you’re just out there to entertain the audience and have a lot of fun doing it.”
