Melfort summer playground program underway, bike parade planned for Friday

The first week of the Melfort summer playground program at the Burke and Brunswick playgrounds is in the books.

Seven more weeks of themed activities are planned from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for children ages five to 12.

Recreation programmer with the City of Melfort Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW the program is back to looking a bit more normal this year.

“There is lots of room for kids and it is a free, drop-in program at both of the playgrounds,” Marshall said.

Last year, pre-registration was a requirement and spots were limited in order to abide by social distancing. Registration can still be done online on the City of Melfort website or in-person upon arrival at the parks.

The two parks also have water features to go along with the planned activities.

“It is a great cool down for children, youth and family alike,” Marshall said. “During this heat wave our spray pads and splash pools are really valuable.”

Bikes and scooters should arrive by 1 p.m. and the playground staff will help with decorating them for the parade.

“At 2 p.m., the fire department is going to be there, and they are going to lead the way, so real-life superheroes this Friday at the KVC,” Marshall said.

Those participating are also asked to bring swimsuits and towels that day as well.

The Melfort moose on the loose is back again so residents are being reminded to keep an eye out for that. If found, the moose can be returned to the KVC and redeemed for prizes.

As the heatwave continues, the hours at the Spruce Haven spray park have been extended to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
