Meadow Lake Sox look to punch ticket to post-season with wildcard game Thursday

The Meadow Lake White Sox will aim to clinch a post-season berth in the quarterfinals of the North Sask. River Baseball League (NSRBL) playoffs with a victory Thursday versus the Battlefords Trappers.

The Sox finished the regular season as the ninth seed, and will play the eighth-seeded Trappers in one of the two single-game elimination wildcard series across the league. The other will feature the tenth-seeded North Battleford Beavers and seventh-seed, Unity Junior Cardinals.

Player-coach with the White Sox, Kevin Gerwing said the team is confident and looking forward to the challenge ahead coming into Thursday’s matchup versus the Trappers.

“We feel pretty good; we played the Trappers already once during the regular season and were able to sneak out a win in Battleford, so it should be another tough one tonight,” Gerwing said.

“We lost a few games I thought we should have won this year, but also came back from a few we were almost out of, so as long as we have our best lineup out there, we can compete with anybody.” — Sox player-coach, Kevin Gerwing

The lower seed remaining of Thursday night’s two wildcard victors will then play the top-seeded Wilkie Brewers in the first round of the playoffs, while the other winning team will play second-seeded Standard Hill. The first round quarterfinals series will begin July 19.

Due to the 10th vs. seventh and ninth vs. eighth structure of the wildcard series, the outcome of Thursday’s Beavers vs. Junior Cardinals showdown will ultimately decide the quarterfinals matchups.

Should the Sox and Beavers win, Meadow Lake will play the second-seeded Standard Hill Lakers. If the Sox and Junior Cardinals win, Meadow Lake will play the top-seeded Wilkie Brewers.

Quarterfinal Matchups (July 19-26)

(First) Wilkie Brewers vs. Lower seed of wildcard victors {in order: (10th) North Battleford Beavers, (ninth) Meadow Lake Sox, or (eighth) Battlefords Trappers}

(Second) Standard Hill vs. Higher seed of the two wildcard victors {in order: (seventh Unity Junior Cardinals, (eighth) Battlefords Trappers, (ninth) Meadow Lake Sox}

(Third) Lloyd Twins vs. (sixth) Macklin Lakers

(Fourth) Kindersley Stalions vs. (fifth) Border City Blue Jays

Tonight’s game between the Meadow Lake Sox and Battlefords Trappers will be played at Beaver Lions Stadium in North Battleford at 7:30 p.m.
