Slo-pitch teams across Saskatchewan gather in Prince Albert for NSA Provincial Championships

Teams from all over Saskatchewan gathered in Prince Albert this weekend to take part in the 2021 NSA Co-ed Provincial Slo-Pitch Championships.

Thirteen teams competed in three divisions at Lakeland Ford Park on Saturday and Sunday for the opportunity to go to Calgary to play in the NSA World Series in September. Three teams, one from each division, will be going to Calgary which will consist of teams from across the country.

“We’re happy, it’s our first year working with NSA and hosting provincials here,” organizer of the event Trevor Gunville told paNOW. “It’s a learning experience and it’s a good way to get our feet wet and hopefully we can have it again next year and have a lot more teams.”

Gunville explained the provincials are usually held in Saskatoon but after talking with the NSA they were looking for something different and thought P.A. would be a good fit.

“It gives some of our local teams and surrounding area an opportunity to come and play,” he said.

They’re in talks with the NSA about hosting it again next year and they hope to grow the tournament. Hosting it this year has given Gunville an idea of what needs to change for next year such as having it earlier in the year. They planned to have it in June but had to bump it back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added provincials have been competitive with plenty high scoring and close games.

“That’s kind of what slo-pitch is about. It’s getting lots of runs and keeping the games close and there’s rules in place to do that, so I mean it was pretty exciting ball to watch,” Gunville said.
