Beavers to clash with rival Brewers Monday as post-season begins

Jul 19, 2021 | 4:22 PM

The North Battleford Beavers will kick off their quarterfinal playoff series versus the rival Wilkie Brewers Monday night (July 19) in Wilkie.

After posting a 3-8 record through the regular season, the tenth-seeded Beavers clinched the final playoff spot in the post-season Thursday with a thrilling 7-6 victory over the seventh-seeded Unity Junior Cardinals in the teams’ single-elimination wildcard game.

The prize? A first-round matchup with the top seed in the North Sask. River Baseball League, a Brewers team who finished the regular season with a 9-2 record, which included a six-game winning streak.

However, player coach of the Beavers, Kyle Gregoire said rather than be intimidated, the team is very-much looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“We’re excited,” Gregoire told battlefordsNOW. “It’s always tough to go against the number one seed in the league, but we’re hoping we can take our success from the wildcard game into this series starting tonight, and renew that rivalry with WIlkie. Our pitching has been good, so as long as we can reduce some of our errors and bat well off the start, we should hopefully see some good success.”

Though the regular season record may have been a bit of a disappointment for the Beavers this year, Gregoire said the team has a chance to forget all that with another memorable playoff run, just a year removed from their first finals appearance as an organization since the late ‘90s.

The Beavers are led offensively by Gregoire, who was selected as the team’s nominee for League MVP this year after leading the club in total plate appearances (41), hits (14), and runs (nine). Skyler Dimmick, who finished second with eight runs and 10 hits, and Bryce Gatzke who also had eight runs and nine hits will also be counted on to help set the tone at the plate.

Wilkie’s MVP nominee, Steve Redlich, led all Brewers players with 11 hits, 10 runs, and 11 Runs Batted In (RBI); while Mike Sittler put up nine hits, 10 runs, and Ricky Cey, eight hits and six runs.

On the pitchers mound, North Battleford’s Aaron Cadrin led the Beavers with 24 strikeouts this year, along with a 1.80 Earned Run Average (ERA). David Schell led the Brewers with 12 strikeouts and a 1.15 ERA.

Monday’s game will be played in Wilkie at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday the series will shift to Beaver Lions Stadium in North Battleford with a 7:30 p.m. game time. Should the series require a third and deciding game, game three will be played Wednesday in Wilkie.
