NSRBL announces new awards for Top Pitcher/Batter for 2021

Jul 20, 2021 | 2:02 PM

Just days after announcing the nominees for 2021 league MVP honours, the North Sask. River Baseball League (NSRBL) has announced two new awards that will also be presented this year, for the first time.

The first is the Valley Ford Sales Top Pitcher Award, while the second is the Western Pro Sports Top Batter Award.

Among the nominees for Top Pitcher are North Battleford Beavers’ standout, Aaron Cadrin, as well as Jaydon Gartner of the Lloyd Twins, Tanner Huber of the Unity Junior Cardinals, Cooper Olson of the Standard Hill Lakers, Chris Osmak of the Lloyd Twins and Reagan Feser of the Macklin Lakers.

Top Batter nominees include: Brock Harrison of the Standard Hill Lakers, Landon Noyes of the Border City Blue Jays, Brett Esau of the Meadow Lake Sox, Jordan Oystrick of the Meadow Lake Sox, Tanner Fleck of the Macklin Lakers, and Dylan Flasch with the Kindersley Stallions.

Cadrin called it ‘a pretty nice honour’ to be nominated for the Top Pitcher Award. A Meota product who grew up in the Battlefords Minor Baseball ranks, this summer marked his tenth year of play in the senior baseball league.

Cadrin threw for a career high 24 strikeouts this year, along with a 1.80 ERA (earned run average), also a career-best. When asked what he felt went right this season, Cadrin said it always comes back to the fundamentals for him: keeping the ball in control, and on target.

“One thing I am good at is locating my pitches and getting the ball in the strike zone,” Cadrin said. “I’m probably throwing a little bit harder this year than in the past, but I don’t throw any passed balls and I hardly walk anyone, so I just try to have really good control and put the ball in play and leave it up to my defence to make the nice plays [when needed].”

Cadrin and his Beavers’ teammates will return to action Wednesday night (July 20) for Game 2 of their first round playoff series with the rival, Wilkie Brewers.

The Beavers will look to tie the best-of-three series, after falling 9-3 Monday, in Game 1. Game 2 will be played at Beaver Lions Stadium in North Battleford, with first pitch at 7:30 p.m.
