Beavers force series-deciding third game versus Brewers following Tuesday win

Jul 21, 2021 | 2:59 PM

It was a ruckus night at Beaver Lions Stadium Tuesday evening, as the hometown North Battleford Beavers topped the rival Wilkie Brewers 3-0 to tie their quarterfinals best-of-three series at a game apiece.

The proverbial cards are now on the table, as the victory sets up a winner-take-all game three Wednesday, July 21, in Wilkie where the victor will advance to the league semifinals.

Beavers’ pitcher, Kelly Baillargeon led the way for the club in game two, surrendering just three hits with no runs allowed through seven innings pitched. However, the Edam, Sask., product was quick to share credit with his teammates as well for their performance with the chips down and season on the line.

“That was probably our best game of the year by far, as I don’t think we made a single error and we played really well,” Baillargeon said. “I was just able to throw strikes and when the team’s playing that good behind you, it’s nice knowing you can put the ball in play and count on them getting the out for you [when needed].”

Also coming off a big performance Tuesday are fellow veterans Kyle Gregoire who went two for three at the plate with a home run in game two and Damon Schaefer who was two for three at the plate with a double and run scored. On the defensive end, third baseman Connor Neave registered three putouts, while Aaron Cadrin at shortstop had five.

The Beavers have been at their best thus far this post-season.

Entering their wildcard play-in series with the seventh-seeded Unity Junior Cardinals (6-5 on the season), the tenth-seeded Beavers (3-8) defeated the Cardinals 7-6 in the wildcard round to get into the playoffs initially, and now sit just a single win away from advancing to the semifinals against the top-seeded Brewers (9-2).

Wednesday’s game in Wilkie will begin at 6:30 p.m.
