Grade Four class learns about and addresses municipal issues

This past year, a grade four class at St. Francis School learned about municipal and provincial government as a part of their social studies program.

As a part of the lesson, the students sent letters to city council which were read by councilors and the mayor.

The students felt many of the letters should be brought to the city’s attention. They addressed concerns about homelessness, a new bridge, and smoking at public parks, concerns some of their parents would share as well.

Part of learning how to support others is understanding our role as a citizen and learning in a positive way, said Lorel Trumier, Education Director for the Prince Albert Roman Catholic Separate School Division.

“Part of our curriculum is to ensure we do educate our children on process around government and government function,” Trumier told paNOW. “We as a school division also strive to promote engagement of their citizenship as they grow and learn in developmental areas.

“What we are hoping to have is engaged citizenship, and positively engaged.”

As students continue to learn about government, they will also learn more about provincial and federal politics. Something Mayor Greg Dionne supports.

“I will give them the contact names and numbers to continue on with the process, which I think is exciting,” Dionne said.

“Now they will get an answer to every one of their letters. The one’s that I can’t answer, they will be able to redirect them to the right sources and keep the process going.”
