Prince Albert drops ranking in Crime Severity Index

Jul 27, 2021 | 1:39 PM

The city of Prince Albert saw a decrease in both violent and non-violent crime in 2020.

The Canadian Centre for Justice and Community Safety Statistics released the Crime Severity Index (CSI) and crime statistics for communities in Canada from last year.

Prince Albert is now ranked seventh overall for cities with a population of more than 10,000 people after seeing a decrease in violent and non-violent crime. P.A. was ranked sixth overall in both 2019 and 2018.

“Our community and our police service were faced with different challenges in 2020,” said Police Chief Jonathan Bergen in a press release. “In addition to targeted enforcement, the police service continues to deploy resources to proactive initiatives aimed at engaging with the wider community in a positive way while also working with government and agency partners to promote healthy lifestyles for individuals and families.”

In 2020, the community was ranked fifth in violent crime, which was a decrease from 2019 when P.A. was placed third overall. Prince Albert also decreased in non-violent crime last year from ninth to 10th place.

Police say the statistics show this is the lowest ranking and lowest non-violent ranking in the community in 10 years. It also shows violent crime at it’s second lowest during the same time frame.

Each year when the annual rankings are released, the Prince Albert Police Service reviews the data to determine what factors may lead to crime in the community such as addictions, poverty, and mental health concerns. The police service also tracks daily trends and statistics and uses them to initiate targeted enforcement on combatting weapons violence, drugs and property crime among other areas.
