U19 Bandits ready for softball provincials this weekend

The Battlefords Bandits U19 softball team will take to the road this weekend for provincials in Regina, August 6-8.

The weekend will mark the team’s first appearance at a provincial tournament since the pre-pandemic summer of 2019.

Head coach of the U19s, Regan Lavallee said the team is really looking forward to the chance to get back on the road for some high-level competition and team bonding.

“Everybody’s just excited about getting back out there and competing in a tournament again with the lack of [softball] events over the last year and a half,” Lavallee said. “It’s just kind of exciting to play at that level again and experience a weekend away as a team and all that comes with it.”

Lavallee said the Bandits feature a good mix of first-year through third-years this season. With a 4-3 record through seven games on the campaign, provincials will serve as a chance for the team to see how they stack up with some of the top U19 programs in the region.

The Bandits are guaranteed four games in the round robin, with the top four teams in the pool advancing to the playoff rounds on Sunday.

The Bandits will open the tournament with two games Friday versus the Kindersley Royals at 12:30 p.m. and the Melville Mills at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday the team will again play twice, facing the Saskatoon Red Sox at 10 a.m. and the Humboldt Thunder at 6:30 p.m.
