Marysburg Royals claim runner up spot after keeping pace at senior provincials

The Senior AA Tier 1 Provincials is always a highlight of the season for the Marysburg Royals.

The hometown Royals faced teams from Carlyle, Saskatoon, and two from Regina with a 3-1 record in the round robin earning their birth into the final following game play at Currie Field in Regina on Aug. 6 to 8.

They would face the Regina Trappers in the final and would keep pace on the bats against former professional baseball pitcher, Dustin Molleken, to record a 10-8 loss, Royals player, Curtis Strueby, told northeastNOW.

“It was a really good game and there’s not much more we could have done,” he said. “They’re a really good team and you know what, so are we. They just happen to beat us in a really well played, close final.”

According to Strueby, the Royals are currently sitting in first place in the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League with a few more games to play, including a doubleheader in Marysburg on Sunday, Aug. 15.

August has always been a tough month for the team with the players going off to university or getting ready for the harvest season.

No matter who takes the field, Strueby said they will have some fun and hopefully hold onto that top spot in the league in the meantime.

Strueby would like to thank the fans that have been supporting them throughout the season, especially the ones that trekked to Regina to cheer them on.

“A lot of people came to watch us, and that was pretty special to see. That means a lot to us because the support we had was, was phenomenal.”
