Construction projects in Melfort moving along as planned

Multiple detours are being experienced by motorists in the City of Melfort with multiple road and infrastructure projects underway.

Director of works and utilities Gerald Gilmore provided northeastNOW with a construction update after last nights regular meeting of council, first noting the considerable upgrades that have been made to the walking trail on the south side of the city.

“The walking trail extension will be beneficial and I’m sure there will be new faces making that loop,” Gilmore said. “It is a loop that is needed and we encourage everyone to make use of it.”

The loop that runs from Wesley St. to South Ave is nearing completion for this construction season. The walking path ends at South Ave. due to the train tracks at Brunswick St.

“We won’t be connecting a paved walkway across the track at this time. Down the road we will certainly address that,” Gilmore said.

Crack filling, the sidewalk program, patching program, downtown water breaks and line painting on Saskatchewan Drive are all on the agenda before construction season wraps up. Crews are also currently repaving Shadd Drive and Groat Drive.

Gilmore said he sees no reason why all the projects won’t be finished this year.

“The one thing about it being dry is the contractors love that because they can come in and be efficient and get the job done,” Gilmore said. “I’m not expecting any issues at all.”

The internal taxiway at the airport is also set to be completed this year but that has no start date yet.

Work is also moving along on the 200 block of Babington East.

“Water and sewer and service connections are being worked on,” Gilmore said. “McDonald Ave. is closed right now to trucks and all traffic because they are installing that sewer line.”

The COVID-19 pandemic caused for a slow start to the construction season with not being able to tender out the projects as quickly, but all in all, things are going well right now, said Gilmore.

“We just want to remind everyone to watch barricades and obey road closures so we can safely get this work completed,” Gilmore said.
