AAA Sharks to host youth development skate Sunday

Aug 12, 2021 | 2:29 PM

The Battlefords AAA Sharks are hosting a Grassroots Female Development Skate Sunday, Aug. 15 at the Access Communications Centre (Civic Centre) in North Battleford.

The camp will include ice times for girls for age categories U9, U11, and U13. The U9s’ session will run 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., while the U11s will take to the ice from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m., and the U13s from 3:00 pm to 4:30 p.m.

Participants are asked to arrive about 30 minutes before their session to allow for adequate time to put on their skates and equipment.

Director with the AAA Sharks, Jeanne Gilchrist said the goal of the skate is to provide youth female players at any stage of their development a chance to work on their fundamental skills.

“The technical part is so important when they’re young, to make sure they have the right technique, and then every child develops at a different level from there,” she said. “I think it should be a lot of fun, and that’s the number one [thing] is you have to have fun.”

Seven Sharks’ players will be on-hand to help lead skills, drills and games; as well as former Sharks’ alum Jetta Derenoski, who played with the local AAA program from 2011-2015 prior to earning a scholarship to play hockey at Nipissing University in Ontario.

Gilchrist said she hopes events like Sunday’s skate can help encourage the next generation of female players to get involved in hockey in the community in the future.

“I think this is a really good opportunity as we’re trying to build the female side of the program and [generate] more exposure,” she said. “Hopefully we can help kids get off the ground and keep them wanting to play hockey and at the same time show their parents some of the benefits of playing.”

Registration for this weekend’s event is open until Saturday, Aug. 14. To learn more, or to register, visit the Battlefords AAA Sharks website.

Sharks Fall camp

Following the youth camp Sunday, the AAA Sharks will be holding their fall ‘ID Camp’ Tuesday, Aug. 17 and Thursday, Aug. 19, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Civic Centre.

The Sharks’ AAA season will begin with a tournament in Calgary in September, prior to the official Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League schedule kick off at the league showcase the weekend of Oct. 3.
