Meadow Lake hosting Percy Derocher Memorial Championship Cup

Aug 13, 2021 | 6:18 PM

With only eight race days left in the 2021 Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association season, Meadow Lake will set the scene of the only remaining event ahead of next week’s season finale.

With the Percy Derocher Memorial Championship Cup being the only event left before the season wraps up in Lloydminster, two Meadow Lake riders, Logan Gorst and DJ King, have their sights set on continuing their successful seasons and finishing strong.

Gorst currently sits as the top rider in the league with 777.5 points, a 40-point lead over the second-best rider, Ryan Baptiste.

Gorst said he’s glad to return for his first races with stakes on the line in his hometown. He added executing clean performances in the final stretch is key to maintaining his lead and finishing the season at the top of the leaderboard.

“It feels good to be racing in my hometown. I’ve done a few fun runs and fundraisers, but to be competing for points and money again feels really good,” Gorst said. “We’re running pretty clean, so we’re just going to stay penalty-free and we should be alright.”

The race is one of few events that have taken place in the city since COVID-19 public health measures were relaxed following province-wide vaccination efforts.

With King remaining in the top-10 drivers on the season, he is hoping to put together a strong performance to vault himself among the top four ahead of this final homestand.

He mentioned being able to put on a show for his community brings excitement, stating he enjoys the rush of performing in front of the home crowd.

“It’s a pretty big wagon community, as you can tell from all the drivers in the area, so to come here and drive the chuckwagons in Meadow Lake is going to be great,” King said.

Daily admission is currently priced at $15 per person, or $40 for a weekend pass. Children under the age of 12 will be allowed to attend free of cost provided they are accompanied by an adult.

The races will begin on August 13 at 6:30 p.m. with the event expected to wrap up on the evening of August 15.
