Local schools get boost from SJHL community ambassadors

The SJHL has announced their RBC Community Ambassador Team with a player from each SJHL team being chosen.

While Braden Birnie of the Weyburn Red Wings would be the top winner for the RBC Community Ambassador award and donating a total of $3,500 to local charities of his choice, each SJHL nominee also received $1,000 to donate to a local charity of their choosing.

This included three local hockey players who have been contributing to their community throughout their time in the SJHL.

Reid Arnold donated to the St. Augustine Elementary School in Humboldt. As a local hockey player, he knows how the young kids look to him and fellow Humboldt Broncos, especially when the players volunteer at the three elementary schools in the city.

“You see the kid, the smiles on their face, the parents like it, and it makes that kid that maybe he’s having a bad day to spreading the day a little bit seeing us around the rink or at their schools for hot lunches or even around town to say hi.”

Arnold, who is now off to post-secondary education in Minot, N.D., always enjoyed volunteering at the schools and got to know most of the teachers, including his Humboldt billet mom who works at St. Augustine’s.

Former Melfort Mustang, Ben Chase, was chosen for his work within the Melfort community. He donated his $1,000 Maude Burke School, a place where he spent much of his time, first listening and reading to kids during the week and later to volunteer to help teach art lessons.

“It’s important as a junior hockey player to do stuff like that because you’re not in school yet. It’s a good life skills just to be able to realize that you know your community matters and that you should be involved.”

While Chase has committed to Wentworth Institute of Technology for the upcoming season, he was proud to be able to represent Melfort as the community ambassador for this year, especially being recognized with other great guys across the league.

Nipawin Hawk’s alumni Jake Tremblay made his donation to the Central Park Elementary School in Nipawin.
