Health officials with the Athabasca Health Authority (AHA) anticipate a promising week as the number of positive cases comes down.

That’s according to AHA Primary Health Care executive director Taiwo Olubanwo, who said all of the positive cases of COVID-19 are contained to Black Lake. There are currently 20 cases active there with 64 close contacts in isolation.

“Now that Stony Rapids has gone green, we really hope that Black Lake will also go green,” Olubanwo said. “Our primary focus now is the vaccine uptake. We are making all efforts to ensure the number increases in terms of the vaccine.”

On Aug. 19, an outbreak was declared at the long-term care centre in Stony Rapids. There are three cases connected to the outbreak including two residents who were there for respite care.

Nearly one in three people living within AHA boundaries are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Targets for vaccinations have been met in Camsell Portage, Stony Rapids and Uranium City, but Black Lake and Fond du Lac remain behind.

In Fond du Lac, one in three people are fully vaccinated while only one in seven people in Black Lake have received two shots

There has been some progress this week as Aug. 19 recorded nine recoveries, the highest recoveries per day since June. All 11 cases that were declared in Stony Rapids were officially recovered Thursday.

In total, AHA has delivered 1,060 first doses of vaccines and 799 second doses.
