Melfort Special Olympics programs returning, hosting fundraising bottle drive

Melfort Special Olympics programming will return this fall.

In the summer, athletes were able to participate in bocce ball and bowling and are currently taking part in a walking program to coincide with the Melfort Multi-K in September.

Chair of the board Carl Kruger told northeastNOW the athletes are excited for the fall and winter.

“Our bowling program and swimming program will start in September,” Kruger said. “As winter comes on, we have curling that goes on and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing,”

With the return of programming comes the need for funds for the group.

“Our major fundraiser that we have done for years, except for last year because of COVID, is our bottle drive,” Kruger said.

The bottle drive will take place on Sept. 7 and 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants will do door to door canvassing, but bottles can also be set out in front of homes to decrease contact.

“They can set them out or if they want to drop off we will be doing our sorting right at SARCAN so they can be brought there,” Kruger said.

Two years ago, the bottle drive brought in around $3,000 which Kruger referred to as being an ‘exceptional year.’

“We are sitting in a good situation right now because of COVID and things being shut down, but it all helps,” Kruger said.

The group is looking ahead to the summer games next year when a couple of bowlers will be sent to compete. Funds would also go toward equipment needs as well.

There are about 40 athletes with Melfort Special Olympics.
