Mustangs ready for full hockey season

The Melfort Mustangs will once again be hitting the ice at the Northern Lights Palace the year with the rest of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League(SJHL).

While last year was a disappointment for the Mustangs, head coach and GM Trevor Blevins told northeastNOW, they did approach the abbreviated season with as much positivity as possible.

“With all the uncertainty and trying to plan and hopefully go and not go, it was stressful but I thought everyone did a great job, you know, keeping positive through it,” Blevins said.

Looking towards what could possibly be a full season, that will start with the Mustang hockey camp with 75 players taking to the ice on Sept. 3.

Some will be returning to the team but Blevins said it was up to them to keep up with training and workouts and the coaching staff will notice “straight away” if that has not been the case.

Melfort is known as a team that comes to compete and Blevins said they want to maintain that reputation in the coming season.

“We always tend to gravitate to players that bring that element to the game.”

Blevins is looking forward to getting players back in the rink and playing some hockey.

“All the players I’ve spoken to in the last few days are super excited to get going,” Blevins said. “First and foremost, that’s going to be the best takeaway is everyone’s gonna get back to the rink, get practicing, and getting playing games and doing what they love.”

On top of the return to the rink, Blevins has extended his contract with the team.

“It is a privilege to coach these young men and guide them towards success on and off the ice,” Blevins said in a recent press release. “I am committed to the development of each individual, and together we will improve on all skills and develop a competitive atmosphere.”

He joined the club as an assistant coach in the 2000s before moving on to be head coach of the Tisdale Trojans. He has been the head coach of the Mustangs since the 2013-2014 season.

In a release, Mustangs president Chad Elliot said it was an easy decision for the organization to keep the local product on board.

“When you have a person in your own community that has the skill and drive he does, it shows in the team he always has under him,” Elliot said. “Pushing and growing these young men so they reach their top potential which usually turns into SJHL finals, and an extension of their hockey careers.”

Blevins had one year remaining on his current deal, the extension keeps Blevins with the club through the 2024-2025 season.
