Melfort Legion hosting wing night ahead of new flooring installment

After a successful rib night in July, the Melfort Legion is hosting a wing and poutine night ahead of the fall.

President Jim Graham told northeastNOW the event is being held ahead of the installation of new flooring in the Corvette Room.

“That is a big achievement for us to get that flooring done,” Graham said. “We were fortunate to get one of the Saskatchewan Governments Veterans facilities grants for it.”

The flooring project is expected to get underway during the second week of September and will take about a week to complete.

Having the funds secured for the flooring and the replacement scheduled, the Legion is looking forward to future projects.

“We got new tables a couple of years ago and we are looking at moving on to new chairs, maybe a little more comfortable seat on them and good bottoms that won’t damage the flooring,” Graham said.

The Legion lounge will be open on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with meals being served at 5 p.m. There will be five different wing flavours available. Regular fries can be requested rather than poutine and dessert will also be served.

Members of the legion are planning for 150 meals throughout the night.

“This is kind of a kick-off to the fall schedule, as we get close to September, we start looking at Remembrance Day,” Graham said.

Graham said it has been quite an exciting time for the legion with having the back wall whitewashed and a poppy mural painted on it.

“It really spruces up the rear of the building, cleans it right up, and gives lots of tradition,” Graham said. “It is one more step in what we have been trying to do, we have been mostly working on the front, but it is nice to do something out back.”

In the winter, much-needed upgrades were made to the front steps of the Melfort Legion building.

Local artist Carla Tyacke got started on the painting of the mural last week.

Except for the week that the flooring will be replaced, bookings at the legion are once again available which Graham hopes will pick up again.

“We have had a few bookings already for in the fall and closer to Christmas time so hopefully things don’t go downhill on us,” Graham said. “When we are low on rentals, these fundraisers really help us heading into the winter with having a cushion for utilities.”

The goal is to have enough funds in place for the worst-case scenario of an extremely cold winter to face the potential extra costs.

“We can actually burn up to $850 worth of gas in a month, so we have to prepare for that,” Graham said.
