An alert has been issued by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) following a sharp increase of COVID-19 cases in Stanley Mission.

According to a public service announcement released Aug. 27, there were 65 cases of COVID-19 in the northern community of approximately 2,000 people. Twenty-six of the cases are the Delta variant and the majority are in the unvaccinated population.

The increase began Aug. 17 when there were only four cases in Stanley Mission. So far, there has been a total of 230 cases since the pandemic began.

“The Stanley Mission Emergency Control Group met today and decided to reinstate COVID restrictions and social distancing at public location such as the band gas bar,” the announcement states. “All community events are cancelled and private household gatherings – parties, card games, and house bingos, etc. – are strongly discouraged, as this is where the spread has been detected.”

Positive cases and close contacts are being closely monitored by healthcare workers and the patients are asked to follow the advice from the health care team in terms of isolation. Leadership is strongly encouraging all band members to get vaccinated.

The LLRIB is also reviewing options for reopening schools in light of the increase.

“Vaccines are safe and approved by Health Canada,” the announcements notes. “Vaccines are available for everyone 12 years and over. Call your local health centre to book an appointment for a vaccine shot. There is no shortage of vaccines and they are free.”

In addition to the 65 cases in Stanley Mission, there are four cases on-reserve in La Ronge among all LLRIB communities. There has been a total of 685 cases and two deaths as of Aug. 27.
