Lloyd Ex Stockade Round-Up returns in November

A longstanding livestock tradition in the Lloydminster region will continue this fall.

The 43rd Annual Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up will take place November 2–6 at the Lloydminster Exhibition Association. A showcase of cattle producers and breeders, the events features purebred, jackpot and junior shows.

Lloyd Ex Agriculture Manager Shelly Ann Dodgson said it’s a critical event for the agriculture community, where critical networking amongst families across the province takes place.

“It’s one of the rare opportunities to get people in the same building together, with similar ideas and goals,” she said.

The round-up will also feature such experiences as an NCAA inspired bred heifer bracket-style show, the Homecoming Speckle Park Sale and the Stockade Lady, King of the Ring and Prospect Steer & Heifer shows. Dodgson said they’re proud of the legacy the event holds, having ran for more than 40 years and being able to keep it alive in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were one of the only places in the prairies that hosted a livestock show last year, so we’re happy to continue,” she said. “So that’s something we’re really proud of in having the show here.”

While they still had limitations in 2020 from government restrictions, Dodgson said they are currently able to operate at roughly the same level as before. This year, they won’t have to downsize the number of cattle in the building or follow the same protocols, based on the province lifting restrictions this summer. A maximum of 450 head of cattle will be accepted and patrons will have more free range.

“We’ll still have the wash stations available, sanitizer as well, but we’re not going to be requiring masks in the building at this point,” Dodgson said.

There’s also a large focus on youth. A $16,000 scholarship for the top showman will be given amongst 16–21 year olds, while the juniors will also get to showcase their product and their family farms during the inaugural Lloyd Ex Junior Show on November 4 and the Sask Junior Gold Show on November 6.

“They get to compete against their peers and they’re going to be watched throughout the event,” Dodgson said.

More information on the round-up and event results will be on the Lloyd Ex website. The show will also be broadcasted live online through DLMS.ca.
