Melfort Library celebrates successful summer reading program

Aug 31, 2021 | 5:09 PM

A total of 4,210 books were read by 230 kids in the summer reading program at the Melfort Public Library.

A wind-up party that, included a story, prizes from local businesses, and a game of BINGO, was held at the library today.

Librarian Janice Haevin told northeastNOW after a quiet winter, the popularity of the summer reading program was a welcome sight.

“We noticed a ton of traffic coming through and the kids were really happy it seemed with the games we had planned for the summer,” Haevin said. “It makes us very happy to have lots of people in the library again.”

On top of winning grand prizes, participants were able to play PLINKO at the library all summer, librarian hide-and-seek and book cover bingo.

Adults and teens were invited to take part this year as well. For every book borrowed, a scratch and win was given for chances at prizes from local businesses. There were 711 scratch and win tickets played this summer.

With the arrival of fall, the staff at the library are in the planning stages for upcoming programming.

“We are hoping story time and toddler time will start in September but until we have our meeting, nothing is quite solid,” Haevin said. “We do have a lot of idea but stay tuned to our Facebook page for the details.”

Library hours were reduced due to the pandemic, but regular hours are set to resume tomorrow. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the library will be open until 9 p.m.
