The myriad of colours and light in nature is what draws Jean M. Dunn to her work.

The North Battleford artist’s show, natural occurrences, is currently running at the Allen Sapp Gallery, lower level art space.

The exhibition includes about 40 paintings and wood carvings of wildlife in their natural habitat. Her pieces include oil as well as acrylic paintings.

Dunn says she especially enjoys depicting the intricate beauty of birds and waterfowl in her craft.

“I love the light going through the feathers,” she said. “I just love watching them. They are inspirational.”

For her work, Dunn says she studies her subjects that include deer, foxes, and a variety of nature’s animals, outside near her home in the Battlefords and throughout Saskatchewan. She also travels to the U.S. where she also has family, as she is originally from Michigan.

The accomplished artist, who also has a background in design and illustration, has spent over 50 years honing her craft.

“I’ve spent my life on that,” she said.

Dunn’s pieces have also been displayed in other exhibitions as well, in Saskatchewan and the U.S.

She said since her husband works with Ducks Unlimited she was fortunate to have had many opportunities to ride around with him, observing ducks and other creatures in nature.

“It comes from being able to travel around and see things,” she said.

City of North Battleford curator and manager of galleries Leah Garven says Dunn’s work is impressive to take in.

“She really has lived the life of a wildlife artist,” Garven said. “That’s being on the land.”

A meet and greet with the artist is planned for Thursday, Sept. 9 at the show, which runs until Sunday, Sept. 19.
