Unity Paw Park to hold 10th-anniversary celebration next weekend

The Unity Paw Park will be celebrating 10 years in the community next Saturday, Sept. 11 from 2-4 p.m.

The fundraising event will feature a weight pulling demo, obedience class demonstrations and more. It will be open to attend for people and visiting dogs alike, as long as all spectator dogs are on-leash while the event is in progress.

Organizer Laura Howdle said the park has been a real boon to the community since first opening a decade ago.

“I know lots of people come and use our park from surrounding areas and there’s people that actually travel from other provinces that have stopped in at Unity to use the park as well,” she said. “So it’s just nice to let everybody know we have that option where people can stop to exercise their dogs while traveling or in the area.”

While admission to the 10th-anniversary celebration will be free for all ages to attend, there will be opportunities to donate, with a number of door prizes and silent auction items donated by local businesses and sponsors, as well as a raffle, which will be drawn at the end of the month.

All proceeds raised from the day will go towards future upkeep of the park and improvement projects, such as a walking path to allow for easier access to the park through the trees, and addressing the rising water table which flooded the area as recently as earlier this year.

“We’re just hoping people will come out to enjoy the day,” Howdle said. “We have a number of volunteers from our community and a local business that cuts the grass, with another business that does our weed spraying. It’s a great community effort to have this park open and operational, so we appreciate all the work of our volunteers that goes into making it happen.”

The Unity Paw Park is located just off the west service road of the town, at the northwest corner of Unity by the CP tracks. There are also signs indicating the park’s whereabouts for those less familiar with the area.
