Incumbent MP Vidal to address inflating cost of living

Conservative MP Gary Vidal is seeking re-election as the federal representative of the Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River riding.

In a previous interview with meadowlakeNOW, he stated the snap election amid rising COVID-19 cases was a ‘selfish’ attempt by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to secure a majority government rather than working with opposing political parties.

With Canadians set to head to the polls later this month, Vidal said residents of his riding have expressed a desire for significant change in the House of Commons.

“This is an election that not a lot of people wanted, other than maybe the Prime Minister,” he said. “If we’re going to have an election, let’s get change.”

Throughout his campaign, he noted many residents in the constituency expressed concerns with the increasing cost of living, especially in the northern areas of Saskatchewan.

The Conservative Party’s approach to combatting the issue is highlighted in its Canada’s Recovery Plan, which mentions making banking, cellphone and internet plans and food prices more affordable through building more critical infrastructure, heavier fines for major corporations, and conducting investigations into company protocols.

Vidal believes this plan holds many fundamental changes that will address many concerns worrying Canadians while laying a clear path for the country’s future.

“We’ve offered a comprehensive plan,” he said. “Canada’s recovery plan to secure the future of Canadians is what we’re doing, and we’re going to continue to run on that.”

Vidal also highlighted the Conservative Party’s platform to resolve issues facing Indigenous people. The six-page Indigenous platform, which mentions reconciliation, supporting Indigenous-owned businesses and supplying clean drinking water, can be found on page 114 in the recovery plan.

As he campaigns for re-election, Vidal stated he hopes to continue advocating for all of the residents in his riding, whether they vote for him or another candidate.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done in spite of all the limitations and restrictions. I represented them through the pandemic, and got some things accomplished,” he said.

“I will continue to work on behalf of all the people of Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River if they give me the privilege of serving them for the next four years.”

Voters will cast their ballots on Sept. 20.
