Public invited to attend all-candidates forum tonight

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce will be holding an all-candidates forum tonight so voters will have a chance to hear from those running in the local Battlefords-Lloydminster riding in the upcoming federal election.

The forum will take place at North Battleford’s Western Development Museum, in the Heritage Hall, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Whether they come out tonight to hear them in live form, or watch on Facebook from the comfort of their comfy chair at home… I think it’s an important election for sure. And, people will want to see the candidates that have the opportunity to represent them in Ottawa,” the chamber’s chief operating officer Linda Machniak said.

The link for the Facebook live stream is available here and the forum will also be recorded for broadcast on Access Cable TV, to be aired at a date to be confirmed.

Four of the six candidates running in the local riding have confirmed they will be participating in the candidates forum. However, the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce did not receive any response from the Green Party or the People’s Party of Canada candidates.

For the format of the event, candidates have three minutes for their opening remarks. This will be followed by a two-minute rapid round, featuring questions on priorities from the Chambers of Commerce, provincially and nationally, and the priorities for Canada’s next parliament. Then, open questions from the public and the media will be read. At the end of the evening, the candidates will have two minutes in the wrap up to give their closing remarks.

Machniak noted questions from the public must be submitted in written form since there will not be an open microphone at the event. The moderator will collect and read the questions. This will better ensure there is no duplication of questions, and allow candidates to respond to questions on as many topics as possible for the time allotted.
