‘We will never forget her’: Billboards installed to raise awareness about missing woman

Sep 8, 2021 | 1:44 PM

Two new billboards have been erected to raise awareness about Happy Charles, who has been missing for more than four years.

One billboard was installed near Northside on Friday, while the second went up just south of Air Ronge on Saturday. A third billboard was previously installed in September 2020 outside of Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital.

The two new signs were made possible through a partnership between Kokums and Mushums Against Drugs and Alcohol (KAMADA), along with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Charles’ mother, Regina Poitras, believes the billboards will increase awareness about her missing daughter.

“The one in Prince Albert, when they put that one up last year, that one brought in a lot of tips and people talking about Happy,” she said. “They would remember something and then phone it in.”

Charles has been missing since April 3, 2017, after last seen walking alone at 11:50 p.m. near PACI High School. Her family has been very active when it comes to finding her as they held multiple events to mark the anniversary of her disappearance, as well as organized several awareness walks between Prince Albert and La Ronge.

Poitras explained there’s been good collaboration between the band and KAMADA. The band paid for the majority of costs associated with the billboards and KAMADA took care of the rest.

“We continue to hope for answers and for closure,” Poitras said. “We will never forget her.”
