Testing clinic upcoming to address loud vehicles in Humboldt

The City of Humboldt is working towards a more peaceful neighbourhood following the passing of amendments to the noise bylaw in the city.

Acceptable decibel levels are now 60 between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. and 55 between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

City manager, Joe Day, said councillors and staff have been receiving complaints from residents about loud vehicles in the city. Most of these complaints have been anecdotal but one resident did attend a council meeting to complain directly to council.

Providing a clear measurement for residential noise was part of the new bylaw, Day told northeastNOW.

‘There’s no doubt that the city has been hearing more complaints from its citizens about noisy vehicles so an important part of the amendment was to include methods so that we could start to monitor and restrict noisy vehicles.”

In order to educate the public on the bylaws, the city will be hosting a noise clinic for residents to test their vehicles.

Day is confident that people will attend so drivers know that they aren’t inadvertently breaking the bylaw with fines starting at $150.

“I think there are some that truly are interested in making sure that they are compliant. Others might just be curious as to what their own vehicles are (at),” he said.

The Humboldt RCMP and Bylaw Enforcement Officer, Justin Tarrant, will work to educate and enforce the new bylaw.

The clinic runs on both Sept. 13 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Humboldt Uniplex parking lot.
