Zion Lutheran Church starting community garden project

Zion Lutheran Church in North Battleford is creating a community garden project at its property on 15th Avenue near Winder Crescent.

The initiative is a partnership with Battlefords Family Health Centre.

Pastor Sheldon Gattinger said the church wanted to provide an opportunity for people in the area to grow their own fruits and vegetables.

“Being a congregation located on Winder Crescent, which is largely apartment buildings and condominiums, people didn’t have access a lot of times to the ability to garden for themselves,” he said.

The church leadership came up with the idea for the garden to help fill a need.

“In terms of people-power and financial ability, we have to try and serve the community around us,” Gattinger said.

He added that having the extra space available on the church property, it seemed like a good opportunity for the project.

The garden will be located in front of the church, on 15th Avenue.

Gattinger said Battlefords Family Health Centre’s Healthy Living Coordinator Rose Favel is coordinating the project for those interested in having a plot. There will be no cost for anyone participating in the project.

“It’s free,” Gattinger said. “All they need to pay with is just their sweat equity.”

The community garden is expected to get started in the spring of 2022.

“It’s great to engage with the people that we live with in the neighbourhood, to help and encourage their food security,” Gattinger said. “Also, it’s just a great time to get the neighbourhood together on a shared mission and project. So we look forward to it.”
