Local nine-man teams kick off high school football season

The high school nine-man football season kicked off on Sept. 10 with multiple local teams taking to the field.

In the C1 league featuring Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin and Churchill, the Tisdale Tornadoes launched their post-COVID season with a hometown win against Nipawin.

Head coach Keenan Carrier said last year’s two-game season against Nipawin did prepare them for the home opener 46–14 win.

Carrier was happy to see a more competitive rematch to start the season.

“Getting out here and having something a little more to play for and a full season to look ahead to, I know my coaches were excited, the players were excited and there’s even a buzz around town. And the crowd that we got out was amazing.”

This year the team has a great group of Grade 12 players that will be finishing off their high school experience with a full football season.

Carrier still credits the players that graduated without that last year as the foundation for their 2021 team.

“I definitely saw a few of them going around watching the game, coming back down to see the team going…obviously appreciative of those players that graduated before this team.”

The Melfort Comets also had an explosive start to their season with a 68–6 win over Churchill in La Ronge.

They will host their own home opener on Sept. 17 when they take on Nipawin.
