Ballantyne promoted to principal at Gordon Denny

Marlina Ballantyne is the new principal at Air Ronge’s Gordon Denny Community School.

Ballantyne has been an educator since completing a Bachelor of Education degree from the Northern Teacher Education Program in 2003. That same year, she joined Northern Lights School Division as a teacher at Gordon Denny and spent time as the vice-principal between 2009 to 2013, and again during the 2020-2021 academic year.

“I just was looking for a new challenge,” Ballantyne said. “I want to spend the rest of my career at Gordon Denny. I just felt I was ready to move into a leadership role.”

Ballantyne replaces Scott Hepworth, who resigned as principal after accepting a position in Stanley Mission. The new vice-principal at Gordon Denny is Tammy Robinson.

With classes beginning about two weeks ago, Ballantyne explained it’s been busy, especially compared to last year when the school division transitioned students and cohorts at a slower pace. She noted students have transitioned well and are fitting into the classroom setting.

There are also two new teachers joining the staff at Gordon Denny, along with a handful of education assistants. Ballantyne added there are no upcoming events the community needs to be aware of considering the high COVID cases and the need to keep the school sanitized and limit the number of people entering.

“We’re not actually planning any big events like we used to,” she said. “I hope we can go back to those days because we do miss them, but at this time, no big events.”
