RCMP Report Part 2: Break and enter investigations continue

There were another 10 break and enter investigations in the Battlefords over the past week.

RCMP are investing a break-in at a business (believed to be Austin’s Saddlery) on Battleford Road in North Battleford, which was reported early Monday morning. The front door was damaged and several items were reported stolen.

Other incidents that occurred during this service period include reported break and enters at a fenced compound and storage unit on Railway Avenue sometime in early the morning hours of September 12, a garage on the 1800 block of 91^st Street on Tuesday and a garage on the 1600 block of 106^th Street on September 10. Multiple items were reported stolen from these incidents.

Tremblay said the RCMP are still working under the belief that some of the break and enters this summer may be related, particularly incidents that occurred at businesses. The garage break-ins are also being investigated for any possible connection, given how close together they occurred, though Tremblay said there’s currently no other evidence pointing towards that conclusion.

“Certainly they can be related, but beyond the fact that they were both garages, there’s nothing to link them to the same individual,” Tremblay said.

Police also arrested a 16 year-old youth for a break and enter to a residence on the 1700 block of 101^st Street Tuesday afternoon. The teen was located fleeing from scene, remanded into custody on charges of break and enter and resisting arrest and appeared in court on September 15.

Tremblay said the youth is very well known to police.

“Under age people tend not to be remanded into custody, unless there’s a substantial criminal history there,” he said.

Vehicle checks and weapons seizures

Battlefords RCMP responded to 519 calls in the latest service period, which included making several arrests as a result of vehicle checks in North Battleford and Saulteaux First Nation on September 10.

The first case also produced a weapons and drugs seizure. Police carried out a vehicle check on the 1700 block of 100^th Street in North Battleford shortly after midnight and arrested the two occupants. Tremblay said this was initiated by an outstanding warrant.

“There would have been an arrest regardless, but the investigation revealed weapons and drugs in the vehicle,” he said.

Both 26 year-old Blake Moccasin and 41 year-old Aaron Moccasin are facing charges of possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, as well as possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine. Both were held in custody and made their first court appearance later that day.

The second case stemmed from a report of people driving around in a firearm in a vehicle on Saulteaux First Nation. Once the vehicle was located that evening, police found weapons inside and as a result, four people were arrested and are facing numerous charges.

A 24 year old woman was released for a future court date on a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, while three males were remanded into custody and appeared in court on Monday.

Twenty-two year-old Dawson Moccasin is charged with three counts fo failing to comply with a release order, 27 year-old Shane Moccasin is charged with possession of a weapon while prohibited and 19 year-old Colton Swiftwolfe is charged possession of a firearm while prohibited and resisting arrest. All three are also charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and Swiftwolfe faces additional weapons related offences.

There were seven vehicle theft investigations over the past week and police are still on the lookout for four.

A red 2013 Dodge Dart (Saskatchewan license 724-MIS) was taken from Ross Crescent on September 10, a black 2012 Dodge Journey (Saskatchewan license 383-KLC) was reported stolen from the fair grounds in North Battleford on September 11 and the theft of a blue 2004 Ford F-250 (Saskatchewan license 621-JRM) was reported from the Meota area on September 7. A red 1998 Toyota Corolla (Saskatchewan license 219-MIR) was also reported stolen after it was left parked along Highway 16 near North Battleford sometime in early September.

Other case totals include 34 Missing person reports, 12 Mental Health Act investigations, nine traffic collisions, four people charged with impaired driving offences and 27 various traffic charges.
