NBCHS take senior football opener with stout defence, late heroics

Strong defence, solid special teams and timely offense was the recipe for success for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Vikings Thursday evening, as the senior football team won their season opener in Saskatoon.

Topping Aden Bowman Collegiate, 14-7 at SMF field for the win, head coach Mike Humenny said there was plenty to like about the team’s performance that led to the victory.

“We were very happy with the performance last night, and especially our defence who played outstanding,” the coach said. “Right from the opening kick, they got better with each series, and especially against the pass. Our opponent actually threw the ball really well, but our defence stepped up and played well all night.”

While the offense may have taken a bit longer to see some results, when the game was on the line Hummeny said it was great to see the way they came together to make plays at the critical times.

“Offensively we struggled a bit in the first half, but as the game went on we were able to run the ball well, and our kicker on special teams played really well as well to put us in good position with his kickoffs. So in all three facets of the game we were very solid for our first game.”

The Vikings opened the scoring with a field goal by kicker, Aiden Collin, who would go 2/3 on the night, putting some points on the board early for the club in the first quarter.

However, with a quick strike by Aden Bowman later in the frame, NBCHS would end up trailing 7-4 by halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Collin’s second field goal drew the game even, 7-7 in the forth.

The winning drive came the VIkings’ way with about 4:30 remaining in the game as the team got the ball back and marched their way downfield, resulting in a Jackson Geddes touchdown to put North Battleford ahead for good, 14-7 with just a minute to go on the game clock.

The Vikings will now get a week to practice and prepare for their return to action next Thursday for their homeopener versus Marion Graham Collegiate in North Battleford. Kickoff will be at 6:30 p.m.
